You are in...now what?
Congratulations on being offered admission to our Graduate School! We certainly hope you will accept our offer. Have you received access to the Admitted Graduate Students Portal? Log in with your Gallaudet email address. This website contains key information about what you need to do before you arrive.. Review the steps involved in morphing into a full-fledged Gallaudet Bison!
1) Have you paid your Admission fee of $100* to Graduate School? This holds your spot in the program. $50 will go back to you upon your arrival, to your student account. The other $50 goes to Graduate Admissions. When you receive the admit letter, it comes with the enrollment form for giving your answer (Accepted, Declined, or Deferred) via the Response button above the letter. After you submit the form, you are taken to the Nelnet payment page immediately. This is where you can make the payment. If you choose to skip it for later, you will need to go to Self Service Center whenever you are ready to make the payment.
*The admission fee is non-refundable.*
2) Have you set up your Gallaudet email address? Is your Gallaudet account activated? Use your Gallaudet email address all the time when corresponding with people on campus. Your personal email may be quarantined as spam and you might wonder why people aren't responding to your email. Your Gallaudet email address also verifies your identity so we know you are actually the person we are talking to (personal emails can come from, well, anyone!). Your Gallaudet account will give you access to our email system, our student information system via Bison, as well as Blackboard, our learning management system. The first thing you will need to do is follow the instructions from Gallaudet Technology Services (GTS) on how to access Gallaudet’s technology resources. All of this information is found on GTS’ webpage: http://newuser.gallaudet.edu. Information on how to set up your Gallaudet email address is in your admit letter sent from the Graduate Admissions office. You will need your student ID number listed in this letter too.
It is very important that you check your Gallaudet email address prior to your arrival to receive announcements and critical information.
Problems? E-mail [email protected] or download and read this informative instructional form.
3) Removed all contingencies on your admission? There are many possible "contingencies", and the most popular ones (so far) are:
TIP: Order your transcripts NOW and add a special note saying to hold the transcript order until your degree has been conferred/posted. Registrar's office will mail your transcript to Graduate Admissions when your degree has been conferred/posted. Just in case, check with the Registrar's office to be sure your transcript has been mailed.
4) Visit Gallaudet's Admitted Graduate Student Portal to do the following:
***There are two parts in the Title IX training. The invitation to complete Part 2 is automatically send 30 days after completion of Part 1. If it has already been over 30 days since you completed Part 1, please contact the Title IX office for assistance. Please be sure to monitor your Gallaudet email address for that notification.***
(if you don't do this, you can't start classes with us---> this is important)
Problems? Please contact the Assistant Dean for Graduate Education, Beth Gibbons, at her email address: [email protected]
5) Join the Masters in Sign Language Education private Facebook group to meet alumni, second year students and your classmates! This is a good place to find roommates, ask current students/alumni for advice or to purchase last year's books at a discount! When you are accepted into the program, you will receive a link to the private Facebook page. Please request to "Join Group" and one of the admins will approve your request! You will also receive a link to another private Facebook page for your own cohort.
6) Check out your Summer classes! As new students, you will be automatically registered for FIVE courses: ASL 709, 724, 741, 743 and 750 this summer. Please let your coordinator know if you want a particular schedule. The sections (.01 or .02) refers to morning or afternoon classes respectively.
Course offerings can be found here: https://www.gallaudet.edu/gallaudet-technology-services/services/bison/student-online-enrollment#item2
You can also check out the full course schedule for each semester offered by all departments here, however this information is updated manually (not automatically): https://www.gallaudet.edu/gallaudet-technology-services/course-schedules
7) Complete Online Business Registration. This is made available late April. This makes sure you promise to pay off your debt by the end of the semester - you cannot register for classes until you complete business registration. Click here to complete your Online Business Registration. There are instructions you can follow at this link:https://www.gallaudet.edu/finance/student-financial-services/instructions-for-online-business-registration-
8) Financial Aid - Visit the Financial Aid website for details including contact information. If you have VR support, hope to receive assistance/scholarships or need student loans, you must complete the following prior to the first day of class (the earlier you do it, the possibility for more funds available).
9) Start ordering books and equipment for your classes right away! The required book/equipment list will be posted in the private Facebook 2019 group and sent directly to your Gallaudet email address approximately the first week of April. The Bookstore will NOT sell the books or equipment needed for your classes, so order now, and online and prepare for your five online courses to begin mid-May.
10) Review your syllabus and get ready to start FIVE hybrid classes mid-May!
Most of your teachers will provide instructions on how to start participating online via email, Blackboard (blackboard.gallaudet.edu).
Highly recommended: Review the technology requirements, recommendations and software frequently used by teachers in the program at this link and tutorial videos here. You do not want to have to learn the "technology" on top of learning the content required in our courses. Our courses are intensive, and many students have mentioned it is better to not make too many commitments during the online portion of the summer in order to be able to keep up with the requirements. Check out MASLED alumni sharing their wisdom and tips with you all here.
11) Participate onsite in the MASLED Graduate Student Orientation (GSO) on Sunday June 16th! Click here for more details about what we have planned for you!
